The material
Linen, and nothing else
Five reasons why, at sea, we use nothing else.
Breathability
The linen fibre is hollow: it takes up moisture and gives it back to the air quickly. Against the skin it stays dry longer than cotton does.
Thermoregulation
It conducts heat better than cotton: cool to the touch, and it stays that way in the sun.
Strength
It is the toughest of the natural fibres, and stronger wet than dry: salt and spray do not wear it out.
A close, light cloth
The tight weave shelters from wind and sun without closing off the air.
Sustainability
In Europe flax grows on rainfall alone, without irrigation, and almost nothing of the plant goes to waste.
